Reflection.

Overall I am really pleased with the outcome of my images. I felt I took a lot of time planning my looks. I managed my time well on both shoots and feel that they both look like a horror couple . I tried to make the makeup look not so dramatic as it is for a music video. They both look like strong characters. I found this brief really interesting as I felt I had more freedom with my looks and could create more beauty looking looks which is what I really enjoy. I developed my characters through watching films and documentaries also distinguishing what it was that was psychotically wrong with the characters and to see if I could turn meanings into a look. At first I was rather worried about working on a male. But I actually enjoyed it.

Quentin photos.

This is my face shot of Quentin. I used a knife as a prop to indicate that he has just been cutting up someone.

For my mid length I decided to style my character wearing a shirt and tie as it is not the typical outfit to wear when murdering. It shows that he cares about his appearance and is pristine. The knife is a weapon and also is like a metaphor for my characters vanity as it is reflective like a mirror.

Creating Quentin.

Face charts.

For Quentins hair I want it to be a right side parting. I want the hair to be completely flat to the head. The hair needs to be really neat his is to reflect my characters perfectionist personalty.
I will create this by using a pin tail comb, and mousse.
I want my Quentine to have perfect pale skin as pale skin has
connantations of horror. Also he stays in with Claudia ll of the time making him pale. I want him to have defined cheekbones as this gives him a more masculine look. I will do this by contouring. I want the eyes to look as tough he has had no sleep. So redness. Why?  because he has been up all night killing! Defined cleaned brows to add to the self loving look. Blood around the mouth to show he has been killing maybe even eating the body he has killed like a cannibal.

Both looks are inspired by narcissism, American psycho and Dorian Gray.

Product list.
Primer: Illamsaqua matte primer.
Foundation:Illamsaqua white base.
Concealer:MAC NC15
Contour:Kryolan brown matte shadow.
Waterline: MAC Red lip pencil.
Powder:Illamasqua loose powder.
Brows: Black matte eye shadow.
Lips: Koylan fake blood.

Here I used the same products. I just thought that the other face chart looked too much like a vampire than physco killer.

Narcissism.

Narcissism.

  1. excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and one's physical appearance.
    • PSYCHOLOGY
extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of one's own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.
    • PSYCHOANALYSIS
self-centredness arising from failure to distinguish the self from external objects, either in very young babies or as a feature of mental disorder.

After watching several films like American psycho and Dorian Gray as my main inspiration I have realized that sinners/ psychopaths show traits of narcissism.
Not only in films but psychopaths in real life many murderers have traits of narcissism as a narcissist has no feelings of remorse after doing something wrong as in their eyes they can do no wrong.

Paul Bernardo is a prime example of this. He was a charismatic, good looking psychopathy. Him and his wicked girlfriend were known as `Barbie and Ken` as they were unsuspected murderers due to their looks. I find this so scary to thi how just because of ones looks you are thought of superior.

I found this fascinating and Paul Berbando being so good looking really helped back up my idea of narcissism in a realistic sense.

How I can show this through the look.

  1. I want my charecter in my music video to have traits of being a narcsiist in the way he looks. I can show this in the way he looks. By having perfect slicked hair. As slicked perfect hair shows traits of being a perfectionist. As it shows you do not like having a ahir out of place. I want to make sure the skin is flawless as it shows that my character takes care of himself. I can show this through perfect brows.

American psycho.

The film American Psycho is an absoloute favourite film of mine. The main character Patrick Bateman is a secret psychotic killer. Who's life revolves around capitalism. He treats people like object, as if he can buy them and do what he likes to them. I love the cinematography of the film. The scenes are so beautifully put together. With the pristine apartment, the stylish suit, slicked back hair and just blood splattered on his face.

He is a typical narcissist and I love this about him as I feel I can show narcism within my character.

Dorian Gray.

A Gothic sort of novel that really stood out for me was `The Picture of Dorian Gray`. (Oscar Wilde). This novel is about a young man who was painted by a painter named Basil Hallward. Basil becomes infatuated with Dorian's appearance and made Dorian believe that you should pursue beauty, and self fulfillment. Making Dorian realizes that his beauty will fad with age. He decides to sell his soul to the painting so to speak. So he can look like that forever. However each sin began to show through time on the painting. The painting is a reminder of what a person can become. It is almost like inner ugliness, showing an ugly soul. Dorian becomes obsessed with his appearance and becomes a narcissist.

Oscar Wilde (1908). The Picture Of Dorian Gray. 3rd ed. London: Bernhard Tauchnitz,. 287.

“There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.”
― Oscar WildeThe Picture of Dorian Gray

I love the idea of my Quentin being a narcissist. Not caring Claudia much in the video. I imagine mirrors in the video or perhaps a mirror maze where Claudia is lost in the maze but all he sees is himself.

I am drawn to the idea of a creating a mysterious male character. One that has handsome features like strong cheekbones. I really like the Dorian Gary image. The dark features and slicked back hair has inspired me to create a vain looking character. I love the pale skin and chiselled features. I ideally would like a model with a apple complexion and dark features.

Quentin.

When I visualize Quentin all of these images come to mind. I think of a psychopath. I will use these inspiring images to create my own character a fragment of Claudia's mind.

Claudia final photos.

Here is my Claudia. I was pleased with how the photos looked. I really enjoyed this project as I felt I had more freedom with my looks. After practicing several designs I decided this design was more my style of makeup that I enjoy doing. If I was to do this again I think I would've shaped the brows differently as I am not too pleased with them or the lips. I felt I managed my time well. The hair was a challenge as my model had a lot of baby hair so I spent a lot of time making sure  I blow dried and styled the hair correctly. I feel my images have elements of my inspirations such as Carrie, femme fatale and of course gothic horror. I wanted my model to look powerful, sexy yet beautiful.

Sleek hair ideas for Claudia.

Claudia's look not only has to be inspired from Gothic horror but also the look has to be suitable for a music video. Therefore the hair and makeup has to be rather modern and stylized in a modern way like we see everyday in music videos. A common look that works extremely well whether it's in a magazine editorial, cat walk or music video is the classic sleeked back hair. It draws attention to facial features, just makes the image look pristine and effortlessly contemporary.
The triangular shape for her torso, the elegant soft curves of her collarbone, lips, sleek hair line and playful black line above the eye lids makes his photo art.

This is demonstrated well in this image it just completes the photo.

How to create a sleek look.

Equipment:
Water spray bottle.
Hair mousse.
Tail comb.
Big rounded brush.
Hair dryer.
Denman brush.
Sectioning clips.

Firstly brush through your models hair ensuring there are no hair knots. Then spray water at your models hair making the hair damp.

Then section your models hair using sectioning clips. Put the hair dryer on a high heat making sure the nozzle is on the end.

Then take the hair starting from the bottom sections, place the round brush from the root of the hair and place the hair dryer to the root of the hair blow drying the hair downwards getting tot he shaft of the hair. Straitening the hair with the hair dryer. Making sure to blow dry the hair in the same direction for the cleanest outcome.

Repeat this action until the hair is completely straight.

Then apply hair mousse into the palm of the hand cover your comb in the mouse and comb the hair back all in the same direction.

Once you are happy with the hair you blow dry the hair closely pushing the hair back in the same direction.

To create this look with the hair down blow dry the hair behind the ears, if the hair will not hold you can pin grips in place making sure you hide the pins well.

To create a sleek pony tail you need to hold the hair back firmly and keep combing through the hair once the hair is at the height you want it to be at; hold the pony tail firmly in place.
Apply two hair pins in the hair bobble place one pin into the hair by the pony tail then wrap the bobble round the hair firmly and pin the other one in place. Creating the perfect ponytail.

Claudia hair chart.

Here is my hair design for Claudia I wanted the hair to be flat and tidy to focus on the makeup. For my character I am going to create a low ponytail. With a right side parting. In order to make the hair as sleek as possible I will be using mousse to make the hair lay flat.

Around the neck I will be adding a hair extension This has been inspired from Femme Fatale murders and women being incontrol as if they have someone on a lead like a dog. It also communicates the message of suicide which is often showcased in horror films.

Equipment.
Pin tail comb.
Hair mousse.
Hair spray.
Hair pins.
Hair ties.

Carrie inspired makeup.

Here is one of my Makeup designs inspired by the movie Carrie. I think it has elements of gothic horror. The pale skin and blood red lips. I have put paint down my neck to symbolize blood dripping like on the prom night. I have used a red eye shadow and macs mixing gel on the eyes this makes the piece look more dramatic.

I was not sure if the eyes looked a little too dramatic so I decided to tone down the eyes. By adding a neutral palette of colours more warm browns to create a softer look liner on top with a slight flick to bring out the eyes. I forgot my cine wax to block out the brows but if I do,do this look I will block out the brows.

Claudia face charts

This face chart was mainly inspired by femme fatale characters inn horror like Carrie. The look is strong and bold. I also think the makeup would like attractive on the face with the dark eyes and black and red lips. I decided to us the colours red and black as black symbolizes sin, darkness, and being evil but also looks `hot` on. The colour black is often associated with the subculture Gothic.

Carrie 2013

Before taking y makeup design any further I wanted to watch the 2013 remake of Carrie to see if there was anything that I particularly in terms of image that I can take and develop into my own design.

I love in both films that they are scared by blood. When they both start their periods they ave blood all over their fingers I love this touch (as sickening as this sounds). But it has inspired my to create perhaps red fingernails, or red covered hands almost like gloves.

Carrie.

The film that inspired me the most image wise. Was the classic horror Carrie(1976 Brian De Palmer).  The film was inspired by the novel `Of The Same Name` By Stephen King.

The synopsis of the film is that Carrie is a bullied, abused, lonely teenager with telekinesis that she finds hard to control. Carrie is made to believe she is satanist;because she is bleeding from her period
. A nasty high school prank at prom where a popular boy takes her to prom and drains the blood out of a pig and throws it on her when she is crowned prom queen at school. This makes Carrie furious in result to being humiliated ;Carrie snaps in a cold rage, and telekinetically seals the exits. She then manipulates a fire hose and uses it to blast the student body with water. The water makes contact with the electrical wiring and ignites a fire that consumes the gym. Nearly all of the students and faculty, including Miss Collins, are killed. Chris and Billy witness the carnage from a high window. Carrie leaves the gym and walks home covered in blood. Chris and Billy attempt to run Carrie over with Billy's car, but Carrie telekinetically flips the car over and causes it to explode, killing both of them.
Carrie returns home and takes a bath to wash off the pig's blood, and puts on her nightgown. She encounters Margaret and breaks down in her arms. Margaret confesses to Carrie that she and her husband believed that sex was a sin and abstained from it, until he got drunk one night and raped her, which she actually enjoyed. This led to Carrie being conceived and her husband leaving them. She embraces Carrie as the two recite the Lord's Prayer together in peace. In the middle of the prayer, Margaret stabs Carrie in the back. Carrie falls down the stairs and is cornered in the kitchen by a crazed Margaret, who believes that killing Carrie will bring peace. Carrie defends herself by crucifying her mother in the kitchen doorway with numerous blades and knives into her hands, chest and abdomen. Overcome with grief, Carrie unhooks her mother just as she causes the house to collapse on the two of them, before ultimately burning to the ground.

I really like this film as I feel its a classic horror film. Where I can take elements from her virginal look, and her `mad` sort of look and design a modern, pop video culture look.

Femme fatale.

A femme fatale is a stock character of a mysterious and seductive woman whose charms ensnare her lovers, often leading them into compromising, dangerous, and deadly situations. She is an archetype of literature and art.

Femme Fatale Lauren Bacall

The classic Femme Fatale was first shown on screen in the 1950's noir films. The women usually had strong faces, wore bright red lipstick signifying danger, and smoked cigarettes as they say there's no fire without smoke again signifying danger.
The hair was waved softly framing their strong features nicely.

A femme fatale character is often portrayed in many Gothic horror films where what seems like an innocent, usually charismatic female will either make a man fall in love with her, she will get close to families or friends and then BAM when you least expect it the mysterious character seeks their revenge.

Two of my favorite horror femme fatales.

Tiffany – Bride Of Chucky (1998)
Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) is head over heels in love with serial killer Charles Lee Ray.  Of course, if that wasn’t bad enough, Tiffany is somewhat psychotic.  In her quest to get all of Chucky’s pieces, she kills a cop, steals his lighter.  There have also been other deaths linked to this blonde beauty.  And that’s while she’s human.
URL:http://www.trulydisturbing.com/2012/09/27/ahlephias-top-13-femme-fatales/
Once in doll form, Tiffany becomes just as deadly as Chucky but we give her stand alone props for being more creative.  After all, this femme fatale has Martha Stewart as her idol.

Carrie White – Carrie (1976)
Insane?  Not so much, but Carrie (Sissy Spacek) was driven to kill by her classmates after a prank on what should be the happiest night for a young lady.  Covered in pigs blood after being named Prom Queen as a cruel joke, Carrie unleashes Hell on Earth when her telekinetic powers get pushed too far.
Revenge for laughing at her?  Maybe.  But truth be told, a lot of Carrie’s victims asked for it.  Never bully an outsider.  It will come back to bite you in the ass.  Or drop a roof beam on you….

Claudia.

Claudia.

Claudia is a character trapped in her own world of horror. When I think of Claudia I think long hair, pale skin like a character out of a horror movie. Claudia could either be the sweet, innocent victim in the movie or the ultimate femme fatale bitch sort of character. She could be completely insane. My mood board shows all of the images that remind me of my character Claudia. I could take it either way. She could be held captive, a complete freak or dainty.

I have been watching many horror movies to try and establish how I would like my Claudia to look.

Gothic horror in music videos.

Considering we are to be creating the looks for a music video I decided to look at some music videos to see what type of look goes on in Gothic horror music videos.
The first video I would like to reference for gothic horror is Blink 182 I miss you. The video is very Gothic within setting, the big mansion. The trees. The pale women in gowns. Spiders. I also love the extreme makeup that the models in the video are wearing.

Another video I chose to help provoke my thoughts in terms of design is My Chemical Romance Helena. This is set in church making it very gothic. The styling, and makeup is gothic. The corset and skirt is another element.

Gothic elements within pop culture.

I think that the videos above are more likely to include obvious gothic elements due to the music genre. However I think I would like my characters in the video to be more of the pop culture image with hints of the gothic element but not too much that its oblivious.

To me Lady Gaga Judas, has many gothic horror elements but done in a modern, stylish way. As in the styling, the chains, and weapons, the lavish, religion jewellery. In fashion the black clothing. The makeup includes; pale complexions, blood red lips, and graphic liner. The liner has swirls in it, it could possibly of been inspired by the gothic architecture. I love the big claw like nails to. It also reminds me of modern femme fatale as she is this powerful woman in control in the video.

In terms of setting the setting at the castle is gothic, yet enchanted.enchanted. Katy's costume and styling has gothic elements to it especially the mysterious looking cape. Her hair is sort of punk within the coloring. However the pale complexion and dark lips has a gothic feel to it I really like the makeup.
This video includes elements of Gothic horror. There's bats in it which has a link with vampires. There's skulls on the floor. There's fangs. I love the dark makeup. I really like the tear of blood which runs down Rhiannas face I feel this is a subtle yet striking touch to the makeup. I love the claw like nails. this video also has a sci-fi element to it which I may explore.

Gothic horror.

When I think of Gothic horror I imagine all things dark, and mysterious. I also think that Gothic architecture and fashion, even the trees to be very beautiful in a dark way and very inspiring and detailed.

Gothic horror is a genre of novels, and films containing horror and romanticism. In this mood board I feel I have included elements of both. I feel as though I understand clearly what Gothic horror is.

Claudia&Quentin.

For our new project we have been given the opportunity to create two characters both fictional. I will develop my characters by beginning with discovering Gothic horror. Through agents of socialization such as film, music video, through text and images. I will keep track of how I will get to my final idea.

Claudia.

I understand that Claudia has always had an unhealthy relationship with movies. She has a soft spot for horror. She does not get out of her flat making her become rather unwell mentally and perhaps physically. She is isolated from the world. All she knows is from what she watches. Therefore her clothing will be inspired by the latest horror film she is watching; as well as how she wears her hair and makeup. However i understand that this look is or a music video. Usually in music videos the women look attractive therefore she will be very attractive with references with horror and Gothic within her makeup and styling, keeping up with pop culture.

Quentin.

Quentin is Claudia's boyfriend. Sometimes he's nice to her, sometimes he is vile. He messes with her emotions. He really is a different person everyday. He looks different everyday. However Claudia is completely in love with him. However like Claudia depending on what horror movie she is watching again he dresses, wears his hair etc like the characters in the movies. He has personality characteristics to the men in the movies. One day he's a hero the next day he is a psycho. The only problem is about Quentin is he does not exist. He is a figure of Claudia's wild, terrifying imagination. By understanding this I will try and get in the mid set of the character that I choose for Quentin. Again I will apply characteristics of horror to my character but in a pop culture/fashion sort of way.

For this project I think it is extremely important to pick the right model for the characters, as models make a huge difference. I will take a good think about what I visualize the image to look like.

final Estella.

Here is a face shot of my Estella design. I was really pleased with the black and white outcome. I used strong contouring and deep toned colours as I knew it was going to be in black and white the colours needed to be rich in order to show up. The makeup was meant to be fresh and innocent looking. It took me quite a long time to perfect the makeup therefore I struggled for time with the hair; which is why the hair does not look that good. I wanted to use a head piece to adorn the head it also adds a contemporary look to the makeup.
If I could re-do my Estella I defiantly would of taken more time on the hair. However I was pleased with the makeup.

Practicing the look.

Here I practiced my total look a week before my assessment. I would like my assessment to look exactly like this as I was really pleased with the outcome. I wanted to practice on my partner as she has distinctive eyes I wanted to make sure the design worked well to suit her features.
I added a necklace to the hair. As I feel this makes the look more interesting. The necklace also has Gothic/Victorian  elements to it. I did not want it to look too innocent.
However for the day that the image is to be taken I will contour a lot more as the image is in black and white.

Final hair

For my final hair design I wanted the hair to be extremely simple as I am not confident with hair. I also wanted the prior  focus to be on simplicity. I wanted the hair to convey a once tidy, controlled style that is getting messy and loosing shape and control. To symbolize Estella slowly loosing control as she is further away out of her mothers reach.

For the hair for Estella I wanted to do something pretty and very simple as I find hair extremely hard I liked this simple hair bun. Also anther thing that strikes me is that the image is also in black and white. I also like the point the hair isn't perfect is's a little messy. Of which I can relate to Estella starting to loose control.

site:http://www.pinterest.com/pin/331577591286528093/
viewed:02.04.14

I found this image to also be inspiring due to a plait reminding me of a rope. Also a rope can be pulled and controlled in a way. I thought I could relate this to Estella. If it was a contemporary Estella I may of used rope in the hair.

Face charts for Estella.

My first face chart was very much inspired by what warm spring days are made of. Pastel colours, soft contouringand eyes. However I have had to say goodbye to this idea although it would look so pretty in colour in black and white pastel colours do not show up very well.

For my next design I have decided to go for deeper colours. As these give a better, more crisp result when shooting in black and white.

Makeup inspirations.

Estella reminds me of doll. In every way. As she is played about with by her mother. She is almost emotionless so it seems like a doll. To me I also imagine her to look very much like a doll. Dainty, yet with prominent features, such as big blue eyes, or a striking jaw line. I imagine her skin to be soft looking and rather fair.

site:http://www.pinterest.com/rlf55/roses/
viewed:26.02.14
Here are some china doll roses that look so pretty and delicate. In the novel Pip describes Estella as being beautiful despite her prideful and snobbish behavior towards him. I also find these roses to be specifically inspiring as they are not like any other rose. Yes they are beautiful but also more delicate and the color of them  is eye catching. I would like to apply a pinch of pink to my makeup as pink always makes a makeup look more pretty.
viewed:26:02.14
I find this makeup to be how I imagine a 21st century Estella to look like. A real natural beauty with cold looking eyes. yet such a soft, feminine look about her. I really like the lip colour and would like to do a peachy look like this.

Shooting in black and white.

Since finding out that the Estella photo shoot will be photographed in Black and white. I have decided to design my makeup around my perception of the character, inspiration and what would work well in black and white. Also taking into consideration of my model.

I will start by deciding the lip colour. So I decided to take a swatch of the colours I am considering using on my model, to see what colours work best with black and white photography.
Here I think that the pastel colours would look perfect for my creation of Estella. Symbolizing innocence, it also looks great with fair skin creating a soft look.
Here I can see that for the photo pastel colours would not work well. I can see that much deeper tones look best on camera. Bright rich toned colours too like orange. However I believe that orange lips would be too modern.
